Delicately hand-carved, this beautiful ivory or agate cameo pendant / brooch features an image of a beautiful woman facing left (less common) & set in 10k yellow gold. This Victorian cameo is in excellent vintage condition, however the clasp and pendant ring were replaced/soldered at some later date thus missing the gold mark usually found on the top of the clasp as my other cameo shows. These cameos I have for sale have been in my family for 4 generations. In researching antique cameos in advance of selling, I found this info below. Portraits that feature a strong, “Roman” nose were made before the 1860s. Mythology scenes usually date from the 18th century to the early 20th century. An authentic cameo will have high-quality figures on it. Portrait cameos that have a straight nose are usually from the Victorian era.If the pin on the back is a plain ‘c-clasp'(the brooch pin loops uunder a c shaped piece of metal with no ‘roll over’ fitting)– chances are it’s an old/ antique brooch.Hardstone cameos are usually made from agate, onyx, or coral. Agate is one of the most popular since it's difficult to carve and requires significantly more talent to produce. The great thing about the cameo is that it is a very resilient piece of jewelry, which could be why they stay intact for so many centuries. If you find that you have a cameo that is of fine value and can be dated Victorian or earlier than you do indeed have a rare and valuable treasure.
