This hat is made of crin: Crin, also known as crinoline or horsehair, is a net-like material, easy to mold and is often used in the decoration of clothing, hats and accessories. The hat is woven in a pattern of strips. Some strips are elaborately knitted, and the rest are almost see-through, creating an elegant summer look. Theflat short crown is surrounded by a black velvet band, which ends at the back in two streamers. The wide brim is also edged in black velvet. At the front, there are three beautiful red fabric roses and a few green fabric leaves. What a stunning look! At each side there are wire stays covered in black velvet, to keep the hat in place, as seen on the photos.Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves.Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble. Alternatively, ‘pancake’ or ‘cart wheel’ hats sat flat atop the head reviving turn of the century styles. There is no label, indicating it was a custom-made creation. This hat is in wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Mannequin not for sale.
