A Victorian tooled leather box with a skeleton key and lided compartment in top for buttons, this is a salesman or store clerk box with a wide assortment of sizes in both heights and diameter of neck size.
All have the makers label on inside of collar, the loose collar was invented back in 1827c when a woman homemaker was washing her husbands white shirts and came up with the idea to remove them to wash them it was easier because the collar was the primary location that attracted the most dirt, the idea caught on and became the standard up until the early 1900's the box has extensive edge damage however the workmanship is very nice and the box would make a wonderful shelf attraction for a home or antique collector.
