このスカーフのデザインは、16世紀の細密画が描かれたイランの写本『シャー・ナーメ（王書）』の一部を基にしています。『シャー・ナーメ』は、イランの伝統的な物語や歴史を壮麗な詩としてまとめた膨大な作品であり、詩人フィルドゥシー（トゥース出身、934年頃生誕、1025年頃没）によって書かれました。
当時、多くのイランの絵画のパトロンがこの国民的叙事詩の写本を依頼しましたが、本作のように華麗で精巧な挿絵が施されたものはわずかしかありませんでした。この写本には256点の細密画が含まれ、1530年代後半に完成しました。1970年、アーサー・A・ホートン・ジュニア氏は、この細密画のうち78点をメトロポリタン美術館に寄贈しました。
