New, vintage (1984) Woodkrafter Kits 13 Curry Sark wooden boat kit.

Model: 1-3001

Very rare collectors’ item. Terrific gift for model makers & boat enthusiasts!!

THE CUTTY SARK: CLIPPER SHIPS WERE BUILT TO BE THE FASTEST SAILING CARGO SHIPS, CARRYING CARGO THAT HAD TO BE DELIVERED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. EACH SEASON THE FIRST CARGO OF THE NEW TEA CROP FROM CHINA TO ARRIVE IN

ENGLAND COULD BE SOLD FOR THE HIGHEST PRICE;

SO THE CLIPPER SHIPS ALL COMPETED TO BE THE FIRST TO ARRIVE WITH THE TEA. THE CUTTY SARK, NAMED AFTER THE CUTTY SARK (SHORT SKIRT) OF BURNS* WITCH, NANNIE, WAS ONE OF THE

FASTEST AND MOST RELIABLE IN HEAVY WEATHER.

SHE WAS LAUNCHED AT DUMBARTON, SCOTLAND IN 1869, AND WAS 212 FEET LONG AND ONLY 36 FEET WIDE. WHEN THE SUEZ CANAL OPENED IN 1870, SAILING CARGO SHIPS COULD NOT COMPETE WITH STEAMSHIPS HEADED FOR THE ORIENT BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH WIND IN THE CANAL FOR THEM TO SAIL THROUGH. SO, IN 1890 THE CUTTY SARK BEGAN CARRYING WOOL FROM AUSTRALIA.
