The Holy Year was first instituted by Pope Boniface in the Year 1300. Every twenty-five years it is proclaimed and inaugurated by the Pontiff, who performs the ceremony of opening the Holy Door under the portico of St. Peter's, while three Basilicas of Rome: St. Paul, St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major. The solemn inauguration takes place with a magnificent Papal Ceremony, attended by pilgrims from all the countries of the world.
The ceremony ends with the most solemn papal benediction Urbi Et Orbi (To Rome and the world) Here recorded in the actual voice of His Holiness Pope Pius XII.
