The business was originally called Brooks Clothes; however, once Brooks Brothers expanded, they changed their name. Sam Feldman was sent to the Enoch Pratt Library's Central Branch to research other possible names for the business. "Webster" won: Herman smoked a Webster's cigar. The first store was opened in 1934 in Portsmouth, VA on $500 borrowed from Fannye Feldman. Sam Feldman became CEO of Webster's Men's Clothing from 1957-1990, and the company went public in 1986. The company also expanded into other branches including Hampstead Clothing Co., Zeidler and Zeidler on the West Coast, and Aggio, their Italian line.Closed (purchased by Edison) in 1990
