This is a beautiful Antique Chinese Hand Carved & Etched Floral Red Soapstone Double Vase measuring in at 6”long and 4” at the highest point. These are also known as brush pots or brush holders. Soapstone is a soft material composed mainly of talc. This carving in particular features two vase-like structures, often used as brush holders or for water in traditional Chinese calligraphy or painting. In between vase/pots are intricately carved floral designs, showcasing the traditional aesthetic of ancient Chinese culture. There are very fine etchings of flowers on the pots and etchings on the flowers featured in the middle of the piece.History: The word "China" (as you can see in the 4th photo) scratched onto the back of one of these pieces is an important clue about the history of these objects.First, it is important to understand a bit about the McKinley Tariff Act, which was passed by Congress in 1890 and went into effect in 1891.One of the provisions of the law required all objects exported to the United States to be marked with the country of origin. Therefore, after 1891 items made in China needed to be marked "China.” So the scratched in word "China" on the back of this soapstone carving, means it was made for export to the U.S. after 1891. So this carving may have been made between 1891 and 1921 with a circa-1910 for the date of origin being about right. The carving is in great condition. See all photos. Sold as is. Thank you!
