Until the development of steam engines and railroads, the growth and development of sawmills depended almost entirely upon timberlands located near sites of water power and water-borne shipping routes. The water power technology common to sawmilling in this period favored smaller mill sites. In 1790 there were already some 150 sawmills in the Province of Maine, but by statehood, (1820), this number had swelled to nearly 750 and by 1840 was 1,400 mills operating on virtually every accessible stream in the state
Maine Sawmills, A History is 62 pages of text and fascinating drawings & photos of sawmill operations from the 18th century up through the 19th century to the early 20th. My favorite photo is of The Tiger, the narrow gauge locomotive that carried sawn lumber from the Whitneyville sawmill to Machiasport, where ships were loaded. If you work in the Maine forest industry, you will read this from cover to cover.
There is wear on the covers, otherwise it's good. See photos.
