This Chicago-based band, known as the pioneers of brass rock, captivated audiences with their R&B-based sound, horn ensemble, and soulful vocals. Their 1971 debut album is a must-have for fans of blue-eyed soul and funky rock.
While the Buckinghams are often considered the originators of brass rock, their hit song Kind of a Drag was actually written by Jimmy Holvey, a core member of The Mob. Many of the Buckinghams' top 10 hits were written by The Mob, highlighting the exceptional songwriting talent within this group.
This Mob album stands out for its exceptional musical quality. While other brass rock bands experimented with lengthy tracks and progressive elements, The Mob focused on creating catchy singles. Their music is compact, melodic, and incredibly accessible.
The sound is a funky blend of R&B and brass rock! The lead vocalist is a soulful powerhouse reminiscent of DC Thomas from BS&T.
This album is packed with excellent tracks, including the upbeat free soul of A1, the Motown pop vibes of B1, the mellow groove of B2, and the groovy and funky B3 and B5. A masterpiece of blue-eyed soul and pre-AOR.
