Richard Hughes's The Fox in the Attic and The Wooden Shepherdess are the first two volumes of his ambitious, unfinished trilogy titled The Human Predicament. These novels intricately weave fictional narratives with historical events to explore Europe's tumultuous interwar period.

The Fox in the Attic (1961) Set in the early 1920s, the novel follows Augustine Penry-Herbert, a young Welsh aristocrat who becomes a suspect in the accidental death of a young girl. To escape the ensuing scandal, Augustine travels to Bavaria to visit his German relatives. There, he becomes entangled in the political unrest of post-World War I Germany, witnessing firsthand the rise of Adolf Hitler and the failed Beer Hall Putsch. Through Augustine's eyes, Hughes examines the complexities of innocence, guilt, and the societal shifts that paved the way for Nazism.
