The Staff of Asclepius has replaced the Caduceus as the symbol of medicine and medical practice. The Caduceus was erroneously adopted by the US Army around the turn of the 20th Century for the same purpose, and the US media has never let us forget it. The Caduceus was the Staff of Hermes, who was the Roman god of thieves. Asclepius was the Roman god of medicine. The Caduceus has two snakes entwined, the Staff of Asclepius has one. The snake is an ancient symbol of medicine because of the natural ability of the snake to shed its old, tattered, and diseased skin to reveal new, healthy, pristine skin.

This magnificent piece, created by silversmith Patrick Burt of The Jewels of Medicine shop in Tempe, Arizona, is an exquisite sculpture in sterling silver. The sterling silver chain is 22” long. Staff: 2 1/8”. This would make the perfect gift for a nursing or medical student about to graduate this spring, or perhaps for the same student about to begin their studies in the autumn.
