Wonderful antique Victorian crystal cayenne condiment jar with flower designed stopper and attached spoon. Body of jar has a lovely panel design with layered rings leading to a narrow fluted neck to complement the stopper. Attached sterling silver spoon has a fabulous aged patina as well along gold gilt body, and bowl.Historically an expensive spice like cayenne was usually only afforded by the wealthiest, and bottles could be quite elaborate with silver devil figures dancing a top of the stopper to signify the hotness of the spice. Bottled spices would be stored in cases and locked up as well because of their value. Originally the spice cayenne was used more as a medicine than a flavoring and was thought to cure all manner of ills.Antique spice jar is in fabulous vintage condition, couple of min. chips along opening edge (seen in close up photo), typical aged patina along attached spoon, no hallmarks.Bottle measures- 6.5" tall x 4Spoon&stopper- 3.75", stopper 1.25 widePlease note that items in shop are vintage and of highest used condition.
