Jim Lee had largely eschewed sequential work in the late 1990s to pursue his business interests as the CEO of Wildstorm. Hush, a collaboration with writer Jeph Loeb, put one of the most popular pencillers in comics back on the map and treated readers to an intriguing mystery plot centered around the identity of the titular villain. Was Hush the Joker, the Riddler, or perhaps the reanimated corpse of despised second Robin Jason Todd? Those questions kept Batman readers burning for the entirety of 2003, as the title secured the number-one sales slot for eleven of the twelve months it was in publication.
