Dear Mr. Hamid:
I am deeply grateful for your cordial letter of August 29 inviting Mrs Truman and me to attend at Trenton next week the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first real fair held in the United States. I regret exceedingly that we are unable to except but I feel that you will readily appreciate the circumstances which hold me in Washington these days.
