BREAKS FOR DAYLIGHT USC vs UCLA, 1968 By Artist Arnold Friberg, 1969 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS PRINT In 1968, Chevrolet commissioned artist Arnold Friberg to paint a series to commemorate the then-anticipated centennial of intercollegiate football in America. Mr. Friberg, a 1956 Academy Award nominee for his design work with Cecil B. DeMille in The Ten Commandments, was well known for his skill at portraying human subjects with a realistic, yet colorful and dramatic, manner.Mr. Friberg created four paintings in the series, each representing a different landmark event or phase of intercollegiate football. The First Game” depicts the first American intercollegiate football game on record – Rutgers vs. Princeton in 1869. Knute Rockne – The Coach” portrays the legendary 1920s Notre Dame coach with his players in a pre-game locker room setting. And then of course OJ
